Solar power has evolved from a niche technology to a cornerstone of the global energy transition, representing one of the most accessible, scalable, and cost-effective solutions for decarbonizing the electricity grid. 

At its core, the process involves the photoelectric effect, where photons from sunlight strike semiconductor materials within photovoltaic (PV) cells—typically silicon—dislodging electrons to create a direct current (DC). This DC electricity is then converted by an inverter into alternating current (AC), which is compatible with the grid and can power homes, businesses, and industries. 

The efficiency of this conversion has steadily improved through innovations in cell design, including monocrystalline panels with their high purity and efficiency, polycrystalline panels offering a cost-effective alternative, and emerging thin-film technologies.
